What do you use for a bookmark?

Open book with envelope for a bookmark

I recently got into the habit of reading a new book every month. And with each book, comes a new bookmark…

I start reading, only to realise half an hour later that I don’t have anything to mark the page. So I scramble around to find something suitable to tuck in. Each month it’s different: a postcard from a friend; a train ticket from a recent weekend away; or a flyer I’ve just received in the post. When things got desperate, I even used a printout of my tax return.

Currently, I’m using one of those tiny envelopes you get with a flower delivery, with a sweet handwritten note inside.

In the event I’m reading a hardback, I start off using the dustcover. But it’s not long until the sleeve starts looking a little bloated. And on the rare occasion I use an actual bookmark, it’s usually a free one you pick up at the bookshop counter.

If I’m really stuck, there’s always the backup of folding down the corner of the page (gasp!).

What do you use? Or are you one of those magic people who can remember their place in a book – no bookmark or dog-eared page needed?

Plus, a beautiful bookshop in London, and the 12 books I read in 2021.
