Three good things

If you love rail travel as much as I do, you’ll be delighted to hear that a new European sleeper train launched this week. Nicknamed the ‘Good Night Train’, passengers can enjoy a quick beer in Brussels before tucking up in their sleeper bed for the night, ready to arrive in Berlin for breakfast. One of the company’s co-founders (a former train guard!) felt the time was right for a railway renaissance. “Until a couple of years ago, everyone thought sleeper trains were a thing of the past and something for hopeless romantics with their heads in the 19th century,” he told the Financial Times. “That is just not the case.”

In other travel news, France’s ban on short-haul domestic flights came into force this week. Now, any journeys that are possible by train in less than 2.5 hours can’t be taken by plane. This new law mostly rules out trips between Paris Orly airport and regional hubs like Nantes, Lyon, and Bordeaux. Hurrah! It’s a step in the right direction.

Lastly, researchers in Denmark have found that vegetarian and vegan diets can lower your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. They analysed four decades' worth of trials comparing groups of volunteers who ate a healthy plant-based diet to those with an omnivorous diet. The results showed that vegetarian and vegan diets were linked with a 14% reduction in artery-clogging cholesterols. I’m usually a ‘flexitarian’ or ‘weekday vegetarian’, but this news has got me thinking about reducing my meat consumption further.

P.S. If you want some veggie inspiration, here’s a list of the fruits and vegetables that are in season right now.  Enjoy!
